Tamron Introduces Its Robust & Affordable 28-75mm f/2.8 Lens to Nikon Z

Tamron’s 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (Model A063) lens has been popular with Sony E users, and now it’s coming to the Nikon Z system.

This zoom lens was previously only available for Sony’s E-mount camera system since 2021 but now the Z version is coming out in April for a fairly decent price of $999.

According to Tamron, “The 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 is compact and easy to use yet has excellent optical performance and is compatible with the latest digital cameras with increasingly high pixel resolution,”

The company also claims a fast, precise and silent linear motor focus mechanism of the Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive design.

This is Tamron’s fourth lens for the Nikon Z ecosystem, with others in the lineup being the 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD, 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD, and 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD.

Interestingly, despite being a long zoom lens, the 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is also a decent performer for close-ups. Its minimal focal distance is just 18 cm or 7.1 inches and it delivers a magnification of up to 1:2.7.

Inside the 28-75mm f/2.8 are 17 elements in 15 groups that include dual low dispersion elements along with Glass Molded Aspherical elements for optical aberration control. It also offers a 67mm filter thread.

The new lens is about as reasonably sized as it was in its Sony E variant, measuring out at a minimum length of 119 mm or 4.7 inches and weighing 550 grams or just over 19 ounces.

Nikon’s own native version of a 28-75 f/2.8 lens is just slightly larger actually, with 1.5 mm more length and a weight of 565 grams.

How well the new Tamron lens performs is something we’ll have to see with actual testing, but its E-mount variant has been an excellent performer with a very affordable price of $799.

Another good thing about the introduction of this Tamron lens is that it gives owners of Nikon Z cameras a total of three f/2.8 standard zoom lens options. These are Nikon’s own 28-75mm f/2.8 at $996, Nikon’s Z 24-70mm f/2.8 (much pricier at $2,096) and this newest Tamron model at $999 (basically $1,000)

Tamron will start shipping the 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (Model A063) lens as of April 18th. You can however request an alert for it now.
