AMD TRX50 vs WRX90

AMD TRX50 vs WRX90Alongside the release of AMD’s newest Threadripper processors with up to 96 cores of power, also comes new TRX50 and WRX90 chipset motherboards. Read on to learn more about TRX50 vs WRX90 and which is best for your next workstation build.

What is AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000

Threadripper 7000 is AMD’s latest line of workstation class processors, and the successor to the PRO WX-5000 series. With the 7000 series, AMD has not only released another Pro line (Threadripper Pro 7000 WX-series), but also reintroduced the HEDT targeted “standard” Threadripper that has not been available since the 3000 series**. Along with Pro 7000 WX and “standard” Threadripper, you’ll also start to see both TRX50 and WRX90 motherboards to go along with them.

**For reasons only they know, AMD releases Threadripper in odd series numbers only – there’s no 2000, 4000, or 6000 Threadripper.

TRX50 vs WRX90 – How do they compare?

TRX50 and WRX90 are actually very similar chipsets. Both use the same sTR5 socket and have the same basic features. The key differentiators are support for the Pro line of processors and those workstation features that are unique to the Pro series only. While TRX50 will work with either processor series, the WRX90 boards are required for the 8 memory channels and additional Gen 5 PCIe lanes. Reference the chart below for an outline:

Which is best for me?

Which Threadripper chipset is best for you really depends on how you’ll make use the of the platform. For users in need of high RAM density where the additional memory channels will be advantageous, the WRX90 platform has significant benefits. Likewise, if you’re using highly threaded applications that will take advantage of the 96 core 7995WX part, the WRX90 is the only and obvious choice.

However, if your use case is more on the HEDT end where 128GB or 256GB of RAM and 32 to 64 processing cores – with no need for future upgrade path – will be more than sufficient, the TRX50 platform likely holds much more value for you.
