Pre-orders for the Apple Vision Pro are almost over – open sales begin on Friday. What apps will you be able to run if you are one of the 200,000 or so buyers? Apple says that you will have over 600 apps to choose from.
Not Netflix or YouTube, but there is a Disney+ app where you can watch IMAX films in 2D and 3D, other titles in 4K and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. Max (nee HBO Max) is available, as is Apple’s own Apple TV+, which includes some 180° 8K 3D videos with Spatial Audio.
Speaking of, if you have an MLS season pass for Apple TV+, you will be able to stream matches live. There’s also the NBA app that will let you watch up to 5 live streams and view live stats. There’s baseball too, with the MLB app you can get a perfect view from home plate and keep an eye on stats. Red Bull TV is available as well and promises to show 3D maps during races paired with video and immersive environments. Golf fans can watch the PGA Tour with the dedicated Vision app with 3D models of golf courses.
Entertainment aside, you can use the Apple Vision Pro for work. You can use the headset’s native apps with a paired Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad. For more power, you can use the Mac Virtual Display and get macOS multitasking. There’s Zoom and Microsoft Teams, Slack, Notion, Todoist and so on.
Going back to entertainment, you will be able to play games too with 250+ titles from Apple Arcade already compatible. You can pair a PS DualSense or Xbox Wireless controller and get going. Most games will be presented on a virtual display, but there are some spatial games too: Synth Riders, LEGO Builder’s Journey, Super Fruit Ninja (yes, really), WHAT THE GOLF?, Cut the Rope 3, Jetpack Joyride 2, Bloons TD 6+ and more.
Note that there are spatial games not available through Arcade, you will find those in the App Store. Of course, you can always run games on your Mac too (using Mac Virtual Display). Fire up steam and start Lies of P or Baldur’s Gate 3.
There’s more – from virtual museums to Star Trek trivia, spatial visualization of airport traffic to 3D weather, educational apps showing the NASA rovers to ones that teleport you inside the cell. Virtual shopping is enabled by J.Crew Virtual Closet and Mytheresa: Luxury Experience and Decathlon. There’s also Lowe’s Style Studio, Wayfair Decorify and Zillow Immerse.
