Sony has announced a new full-frame mirrorless camera with the world’s first global shutter that can capture 4K video at up to 120 frames per second.
The Sony Alpha 9 III can capture burst speeds with no rolling shutter or blackout, through AI-driven processing and real-time recognition autofocus.
“Designed with the needs and demands of professional photographers in mind, every single update to this camera – from the sensor to even the size to the button layouts and menu functions – has been made to address specific input and feedback from our community,” states says Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics.
“We have listened and are thrilled to bring the new capabilities of the Alpha 9 III to market capabilities which allow photographers to capture things they’ve never been able to capture before.”
The 24.6 megapixel Exmor RS CMOS image sensor deploys the world’s first global shutter and Sony’s latest BIONZ XR processor to manage real-time subject recognition and tracking, with up to 8 stops of 5-axis in-body image stabilization for high-performance image rendering.
The A 9 III uses focal plane phase detection autofocus with real-time recognition AF to identify and track a wide variety of subjects.
This AF scheme, powered by artificial intelligence, will recognize, track, and focus on eyes and with a maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 of a second, capture images that were not previously possible using the naked eye.
The A 9 III also has a high-frequency flicker function, which reduces sync issues under LED lighting and allows fine-tuned adjustment of shutter speeds to match the flicker frequency while viewing through a monitor.
Photographers can also use a pre-capture function to continuously record up to one second before the shutter is released, and a Continuous Shooting Speed Boost function offers to change the shutter speed at any time during shooting.
The camera’s large memory buffer is capable of storing up to 390 fine JPEG images captured at up to 30 frames per second.
The camera can also capture 10-bit 4K video at up to 120 frames per second without cropping, or 4K60p video with 6K oversampling. The camera can also capture 16-bit raw via the full-size HDMI port to a compatible external recorder.
The Alpha 9 incorporates the S-Cinetone color science used in the VENICE cinema camera. Deploying this scheme enables filmmakers to create cinematic videos straight out of the camera without the need for post-processing.
Users can also set the camera to S-Log3 and apply a custom LUT for capturing in a preset color gamut.
The A 9 III also supports high-speed Wi-Fi data transfer using the 5 GH z Wi-Fi band for maximum speed and file upload via FTP or capturing to CF Express Type A or UHS-II memory cards, as well as SSDs through its USB 3.2 Type-C connector.
The A 9 III also has a 4-axis articulating LCD touchscreen and a 9.44 million dot Quad XGA OLED electronic viewfinder.
A New Lens
Sony has also announced a new 300mm F2.8 G Master OSS lens, the world’s lightest large aperture telephoto prime. The lens weighs approximately 1470 grams (3.24 pounds) and uses durable magnesium alloys for robust performance that doesn’t weigh down the camera operator.
The lens has three Super Extra-low Dispersion(ED) glass elements and one ED glass element, that can effectively suppress chromatic aberration and provide high resolution and contrast across the entire frame.
With a high-speed 11-bladed aperture, the 300mm G Master lens offers smooth, rounded bokeh and a narrow depth of field that separates the subject from its background.
Pricing and Availability:
The Sony Alpha 9 III full-frame mirrorless camera is available for preorder from Sony’s network of authorized dealers at a retail price of $5999. The Sony E-Mount 300mm F2.8 G Master OSS lens is available for pre-order for $5999. Both products will ship in February 2024.
