Times are changing and hybrid mirrorless cameras, alongside dedicated video/cinema cameras, can now offer greater capabilities than ever before. Moreover, they come at a fraction of the cost while delivering superior image quality compared to just a few years ago. If you are an industry veteran, we are sure that you remember how much a Sony Beta SP/Digital Beta camera used to cost in the “old days”.
But it’s not only about the price. Camera features also improved significantly. A good example is autofocus. If, in the past, video creators who worked with autofocus were often perceived as amateurs not adept at manual focus, in today’s reality, a mirrorless hybrid camera lacking reliable autofocus for video will struggle to find market success. In recent years, autofocus has improved and continues to improve significantly, allowing “one-man band” productions to “control it all” without investing in additional equipment or having a dedicated person to pull focus. So, if in the past, some professionals didn’t even know how to spell ‘autofocus’, this feature has become acceptable by many as it simply serves as a feature that aids us in what we do. Other good examples are the internal camera stabilization system, external recording to SSD, robust recording codecs, and more.
But what are the features that are most important to YOU when you buy a camera? Autofocus, In Body Stabilization System, good lowight performance, external recording to SSD, internal RAW recording, internal ProRes recording, flat picture profile? Yes, we are aware that different projects have different needs, and different segments of our industry require different skills, yet we are incredibly curious to hear your thoughts! So much so that in this poll, we are allowing “multiple click selection”, meaning you can choose up to three features that are important to you, instead of a single item.
And, as always, thank you for your participation!
