Insta360 announced the release of their latest camera, the Insta360 X4. Building on the success of the X3, the X4 now captures 360° footage in 8K, has a bigger battery, and new options for resolution and framerates – for example, a new high frame rate of 4K100fps for slow-motion. Let’s have a look at more of the particulars!
Insta360 continues to push the limits for action and VR cameras! In 2022, they released the Insta360 ONE RS 1-inch 360 Edition, followed only a month later by the Insta360 X3 with a plethora of great features. Now they’ve given creators even more possibilities in their new model, the X4.
New dimensions and a bigger battery
The X4 is larger than its predecessor at 46×123.6×37.6 mm/1.81×4.86×1.48in and weighs 203 grams, but it is still a decently compact camera. There is now a 2290 mAh battery with a 67% longer run time than the X3, clocking in at 135 minutes (up from 81 minutes on the X3).
What’s new?
When it comes to action, the X4 has some new features to offer:
- Removable lens guard – the Standard comes with the camera, or there is a Premium, which is scratch-resistant, tempered glass.
- 2.5″ Corning® Gorilla Glass® Touchscreen
- FlowState Stabilization & 360° Horizon Lock
- 135-Minute Run Time (at 5.7K30fps). Run time at 8K30fps is 75 minutes.
- Waterproof down to 10m/33ft, or you can use the Invisible Dive Case for 360° underwater stitching down to 49.99m/164ft.
- Cold-Weather Resistant as low as -4ºF (-20ºC) – and as high as 104°F (40℃)
Insta360 X4 – recording modes
Let’s have a look at the recording modes and take note of the new additions. As with the X3, after filming in 360° Mode, you can ‘reframe’ (in other words, go back and choose any angle you wish), but with 8K30fps, you should be seeing some pretty incredible detail. You can also shoot at 5.7K60fps which should make for smoother and sharper action footage, and, in addition, the new 4K100fps option allows for high-quality slow-motion recordings. In the wide-angle Single-Lens Mode, you can now shoot at 4K60fps, plus there is an ultra-wide 170° view with MaxView at an upgraded 4K30fps. Finally, in Me Mode, you can automatically frame the subject (no reframing!) while still keeping the selfie stick invisible. It’s also up to 4K30fps (up from 1080p with X3) or 2.7K120fps.
360° Mode:
- 8K: 7680×3840 @30 / 25 / 24fps
- 5.7K+: 5760×2880@30 / 25/ 24fps
- 5.7K: 5760×2880@60 /50 /30 /25 / 24fps
- 4K: 3840×1920@100 / 60/ 50 / 30 / 25 / 24fps
Single-Lens Mode:
- 4K: 3840×2160 @60 / 50 / 30 / 25 / 24fps
- 2.7K: 2720×1536@60 / 50 / 30 / 25 / 24fps
- 1080p: 1920×1080@60 / 50 / 30 / 25 / 24fps
Me Mode:
- 4K: 3840×2160@30 / 25 / 24fps
- 2.7K: 2720×1536@120 / 100 / 60 / 50fps
- 1080p: 1920×1080@120 / 100 / 60 / 50fps
“8K will be transformative for creators as reframed video now holds its own alongside footage shot on regular cameras. But X4 isn’t just about image quality, it’s designed to be the most robust, easy-to-use 360° camera ever, no matter your experience. This idea was at the heart of a lot of the changes we made.”
