Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer aka ChatGPT, as it is popularly called is a large language-model-based chatbot developed by OpenAI that has taken the world by storm. Launched last year on November 22, this chatbot allows users to get answers to answers or help with anything they need. ChatGPT is a huge step towards Artificial Intelligence and OpenAI claims that it is an always developing and progressing project. This is the reason why OpenAI keeps introducing new versions and new features to make the ChatGPT experience even better.
For example, in November 2023 itself, OpenAI debuted GPT-4 Turbo (having 2 versions), fine-tuned GPT-4, offered a provision that allows users to build their own GPT, launched DALL-E 3 API and new text-to-speech models, and much more. One more functionality that OpenAI introduced for ChatGPT recently was voice-based conversations with ChatGPT. It was rolled out in September 2023 but till now it was restricted to paid subscribers only. Read on to learn more about this feature and how to check if it has been rolled out on your device.
ChatGPT Voice-Based Conversation Feature for Free
Up until now, the Voice-based conversation feature was priced at 20 dollars per month so only subscribers could access it, but now the functionality is being made available to all Android and iOS users, that too for free. The voice-based conversation feature is being rolled out for free on the ChatGPT app for Android and iOS, but it won’t be available on the web version of ChatGPT as of now.
“ChatGPT with voice is now available to all free users. Download the app on your phone and tap the headphones icon to start a conversation,” OpenAI wrote on microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter).

Voice-Based Conversation Feature: What is it?
The voice-based conversation feature on ChatGPT, as the name suggests allows users to ask queries to GPT verbally. You no longer have to type your question or project title, but just say it like you do with Google, Alexa, or Siri. The Chatbot will convert this verbal query into text and feed it into the LLM to come up with an answer. The ChatGPT also answers you back in voice format, so you don’t have to read what’s written on the screen but just listen to it.
After you are done using the feature, you can click on the close button to go back to the homepage of your ChatGPT window. These voice conversations will be available in written format on your ChatGPT chat window.
Basically, this means that now if you are working on writing a report on a topic and get stuck somewhere, you can switch to the ChatGPT app on your mobile or tablet, speak up your query, and listen to the answer to continue working without wasting time in writing or reading the text on the screen.
The service is slowly being rolled out to all Android and iOS devices, follow the steps below to know if you have received the feature or not.
