DJI has announced its latest professional-grade gimbal stabilizers, the RS4 and RS4 Pro. These gimbals can carry both mirrorless and cinema payloads while expanding autofocus through an optional LiDar-based autofocus assembly.
They have improved movement, faster balancing algorithms, and a one-button vertical adjustment without having to rebalance. The RS4 and RS4 Pro are designed to support cameras according to each weight.
The RS4
The RS4 can handle DSLR and mirrorless camera platforms with weights up to 6.6 pounds and supports mobile devices like the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It also has an extended tilting axis of about 8.5 mm.
The RS4 also supports a new first-person mode that uses the movement of the grip to trigger the gimbal’s three-axis to follow, making rotational and POV footage look more natural.
The RS4 Pro
On the other hand, the RS4 Pro is designed for heavier cinema camera payloads and can handle additional accessories such as external monitor recorders or wireless autofocus devices.
It has carbon-fiber arms that can easily handle payloads of up to 10 pounds. DJI has improved the motor torque of the gimbal balancing motors by 20 percent, to give the gimbal a higher stabilizing response, even with a maxed-out configuration.
Moreover, it comes with a dynamic new Car Mount mode, which assures the capture of smooth footage from a moving vehicle.
DJI has sought to further improve the camera shake compensation of both models by adding new low-friction Teflon coatings to all three axes.
This new coating promises minute balancing with millimeter-scale adjustments that are smooth and unnoticeable. There is also a fine-tuning knob for further manual balancing on the tilt axis for an extra measure of control.
The RS4 has a battery life of up to 12 hours and supports 18-watt PD fast charging in about 2.5 hours. The RS4 Pro has a slightly larger battery for an extra hour of battery life and recharges in just 1.5 hours.
There is also an optional extended battery that DJI states can provide up to 24 hours of continuous use.
The DJI Focus Pro
DJI’s new Focus Pro wireless autofocus device provides focus/iris/zoom (FIZ) control over the gimbal and focusing mechanism so that a camera assistant can make wireless adjustments while the camera operator focuses on gimbal movements.
DJI also offers a wireless Hand Unit giving the gimbal camera operator the freedom to focus on camera movement, while the assistant cameraman makes all the adjustments.
Pricing and Availability
The DJI RS4 is available now for a retail price of $549.00, or $719 for the Combo kit. The RS4 Pro has a retail price of $869.00, gimbal only, or the Combo Kit for $1,099.
The DJI Focus Pro Motor retails for $149, while the Focus Pro LiDAR Unit retails for $699 (coming soon), and the Focus Pro Hand Unit is $929.
The Focus Pro All-in-One Combo retails for $1849 and includes all three units, plus the extended battery grip, while the Creator Combo omits the Hand Unit for $999.
