Disney+ Password-Sharing Crackdown To Begin In June, Will Expand Globally By September

Password sharing has always been a hurdle in the growth of OTT platforms. While Netflix, the popular streaming platform, has taken several drastic steps to curb the unauthorized sharing of passwords, Disney+ is also moving in the same direction. In an interview with CNBC, Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, said the company plans to foray into password sharing (to eliminate it) in June 2024.

Password-Sharing Crackdown To Help Disney+ Increase Its Revenue

The streaming platform plans to launch its initial efforts to prevent the sharing of passwords in June 2024 in a few markets. However, the company wants to achieve a full rollout by September 2024. This two-step approach will help the platform determine whether the measures it implements are effective and, if yes, to what extent. Starting June 2024, users flagged for using others’ passwords will be asked to create their accounts on the platform.

Further, the company will also provide an option to add people who live in different households, albiet at an additional charge, which isn’t disclosed at the moment. To begin with, the company will implement the measures in the United States, where subscribers have already received an email regarding an upcoming policy change earlier this year.

Password-Sharing Rules To Be Applicable Starting June 2024

The new password-sharing rules were shared with all new subscribers in January 2024 and later extended to existing subscribers in March. When Netflix launched a similar password-sharing restriction, it witnessed a drop in subscribers. However, the company’s profits eventually increased as more users started to pay for watching Netflix’s content. Disney+ is expecting a similar result by launching its password-sharing restrictions.

Although that is all the information available, the price for sharing passwords with someone outside a household should surface on the internet in the coming days. For those catching up, Netflix charges $7.99 per month from those sharing their account with others.
