Canon has issued a statement proclaiming itself the number 1 mirrorless camera brand in the USA for 2023. This is based on sales tracking data throughout the year and makes three years in a row for Canon.
“The data is clear”, says Canon about its announcement. Canon attributes its success to the Canon EOS R5 (buy here), EOS R5C (buy here), EOS R6 II (buy here), and EOS R8 (buy here), calling them a “robust rolodex of cameras”.
While Nikon still has a long way to go to catch up, Sony will be disappointed to have not clawed back enough of a share to take Canon’s crown.

Canon does cite the sources of their data, but they don’t talk about any specific sales numbers. So, we’ve really no idea which models of cameras and lenses they’re selling the most of. We don’t know how their sales stack up against the competition, either, or by how far Canon is ahead.
But, winning by an inch or a mile is still winning. It will be interesting to see if or how things change over the coming year. Nikon is starting to make a little bit of a comeback. And now that Sony has one camera with a global-shutter CMOS sensor, it won’t be long before they begin to implement them in other parts of their lineup.
