Apple Vision Pro 2 to upgrade display tech for brighter and efficient displays

Apple Vision Pro headset for spatial computing and mixed reality (MR) is due to launch in January or February 2024 giving us a few weeks to wait for. Turns out the Cupertino-based giant is already working on the second-gen Vision Pro, aptly dubbed Vision Pro 2, that will bring a brighter and more efficient display onboard.

Apple’s planning to upgrade display tech on 2027 Vision Pro 2

According to market research firm Omdia, Apple is planning to upgrade Vision Pro 2 with an RGB OLEDoS display in 2027. The original Vision Pro uses a WOLED display with a color filter. Upgrading to a newer display tech would remove the additional color filter and help with greater power efficiency and higher brightness than the current tech.

Turns out Samsung Display (Samsung’s display-making arm) is the only manufacturer that can deliver RGB OLEDoS displays. The company is making these displays for military use at its newly acquired manufacturing firm. If Apple decides to go through with the rumored upgrade, it will have to overthrow Sony and replace them with Samsung Display.

Sony itself is battling limited production and yield rate of 50% which is comparatively lower than the market leaders like Samsung Display.

Moving to a RGB OLEDoS promises battery power efficiency which is crucial to improve battery life on a headset like Vision Pro 2. Additionally, it makes the display even brighter than before making it easier for the users to see colors, distinguish details, and beyond.

The RGB OLEDoS uses RGB OLED on silicon all fused in a single layer and draws light and color from the sub-pixel structure of RGB. On the other hand, the WOLED display used on the original Vision Pros uses an additional color filter making them less power efficient than the next-gen OLEDoS.

Apple Vision Pro 2 Release Date

As far as the release date is concerned, Apple Vision Pro 2 will make its debut in the distant future sometime in 2027. At the time of writing this, we were still a few weeks away from the original Vision Pro launch which goes to show where Vision Pro 2 is in the timeline.

Additionally, there’s an affordable Vision Pro in the making as well slated to arrive sometime in 2025. It will use the same mechanics as the original Vision Pro but with a few features removed to make it cost-effective. But there’s skepticism so take it with a pinch of salt. The current original Vision Pro is priced at a whopping $3,499.
