Apple Patents MagSafe Technology That Can Recognize Devices By Transmitting Data


Apple’s MagSafe technology has been around for quite some time. It allows Apple devices and other certified accessories to connect via a strong magnetic connection that keeps the wireless charging coils in the best possible alignment and ensures efficient wireless charging. However, a newly granted patent reveals that the company is working to improve the current MagSafe wireless charging technology.

Second-Generation MagSafe Might Be Able To Distinguish Between Devices

Right now, there are two types of MagSafe devices in the market. First are the chargers that help juice up Apple products that support the tech. Second, the certified accessories, such as phone cases, allow users to charge their iPhones through a MagSafe charger. However, the company elaborates in a patent that the technology has some drawbacks.

Some accessory devices form a heat trap during wireless charging, which could hamper an iPhone’s performance by raising the temperature above the optimum level. This generally happens when users try to charge their iPhones through a non-certified wireless charger and could cause temporary performance issues.

A Magnetic Field Sensor To Recognize How The Device Is Connected

Apple proposes to fit a magnetic field sensor in the MagSafe arrangement to make the MagSafe technology smarter. With the sensor, the phone should be able to recognize the magnetic field signature and compare it with the preset to determine whether users are charging directly on a charger or through a phone case.

Accordingly, the charging components could switch off at set temperatures to better regulate heat while charging through a case or on a charger. In another level of recognition, the company suggests integrating a wireless communication circuit in the bottom wall of the magnetic arrangement, which transmits certain information to the charging devices as a form of verification.

Patent Reveals Promising Improvements To MagSafe Tech

Keeping the technical language of the patent aside, it talks about improving MagSafe technology and including a magnetic field sensor that recognizes different types of MagSafe devices and another communication circuit that helps the device exchange information with the charger, which could be temperature or voltage readings, or other verification-related information.
