Sony Introduces “Tough”, Fast New CFexpress B Cards

Sony is now offering a new line of CFexpress Type B cards called “Tough” which come in 240GB and 480GB capacities.

Both of the new data storage cards promise high-performance read and write speeds and reliable data storage for photographers and video creators who use compatible cameras.

They’re particularly aimed at owners of Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon and Panasonic cameras. Curiously, Sony cameras not so much.

Of the two, the larger model, the 480GB Tough card (SKU: CEB-G480T) is claimed to offer a maximum read speed of 1,850MB/s and a write speed of 1,740MB/s. The 240GB (SKU: CEB-G240T) edition delivers the same read speed, but a slightly lower write speed of 1,600MB/s.

According to Sony’s publicity for the two CFexpress cards,

“Thanks to its fast write speed, it goes great with high-resolution cameras, the CEB-G series is designed for professional photographers, videographers, and enthusiasts looking to boost workflows with its fast speed and exceptional reliability.”

Sony wants the cards to live up to its branding catchphrase of “Sony Tough”, hence their name. This however isn’t just advertising jargon.

According to the company, the cards are designed to be five times stronger than average against drops and three times more resilient against bending force. This makes them ideal for rugged field use and travel photography or video shooting.

They also have exceptional resistance to high temperatures, X-ray penetration, UV radiation and even electrostatic shocks.

Sony also separately sells a CFexpress Type B card reader called the MRW-G1, which aside from being used to transfer files to or from the cards, can also be used to scan their general condition. This can be done via Sony’s Media Scan Utility along with the reader.

Sony offers another piece of software with the card reader, which can also recover accidentally deleted files. This is called Memory Card File Rescue

Sony will be shipping the new Tough CFexpress Type B cards to stores and other retailers in May. The 240GB model will sell for $200 while the 480GB edition will retail for $320.

The cards aren’t yet up for pre-order, but the links to each above let you get on a notification list for when they’re available.

If you’re in a hurry for a sturdy new CFexpress card for your field photography or video needs, Sony already sells other models.

These include 128GB, 512GB, 920GB and 1920GB editions of these exact same “Sony Tough” cards with all their additional resilience to damage. These are already available for shipping.
