At the Consumer Electronics Show 2024, Lenovo announced a new hybrid device that resembles a Windows laptop but doubles as an Android tablet. Essentially, the device consists of two removable parts: one that houses the keyboard and other laptop-specific components. The other half has a touchscreen display that can run as an independent Android tablet.
The Device Comes Apart Into A Compact PC Module And An Android Tablet
Per the official press release, the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid “can switch from a laptop to a tablet and back seamlessly.” However, it’s not like other convertible laptops available in the market, which usually ship with a 360-degree foldable screen. As mentioned earlier, the device consists of two parts that can function without the other.
For instance, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid Station (the part with the keyboard) can be used with an external display for a complete Windows experience. On the other hand, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid Tab (the part with the screen) can be detached and used as a standalone Android tablet. This way, the device can cater to various audiences, including media content creators, designers, logistic professionals, analysts, etc.
ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid Use Cases
Apart from the scenarios mentioned above, here are some additional use cases of the new ThinkBook.
- Traditional Windows 11 laptop with both units attached
- Windows 11 laptop with Hybrid Stream that enables streaming of Android applications on screen in Picture-in-Picture mode
- As an Android tablet with a keyboard
ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid Station Specifications
The ThinkBook comes with a 14-inch 2.8K OLED touchscreen that supports 100 percent DCI: P3. It also supports inputs via the Lenovo Tab Pen Plus. While the Windows half runs on the Intel Core Ultra 7 processor with 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM, the Android half features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC with 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and Android 13. In retrospect, both are capable processors, especially for a hybrid device.
The hybrid station features 1TB of SSD storage, and the tablet has 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. While the laptop chassis has two 2W Harman Kardon speakers, the tablet ships with four 1W Super-linear speakers. In other words, watching content like YouTube videos or movies should be a great experience. The tablet also has a 1080p IR camera, which doubles as the webcam for the laptop. On the rear, it has a 13MP primary and 5MP secondary shooter.
Like other components, the laptop and the tablet halves have their own batteries. For instance, the Hybrid Station has a 75WHr that supports 100W fast charging. In contrast, the Hybrid Tab has a 38WHr battery. The devices weigh 970 and 785 grams, respectively.
ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid Station Specifications Price And Availability
The hybrid device will cost $1,999, which is about Rs. 1,60,000. It will be available in the United States in the fourth quarter of this year. Although Lenovo didn’t mention its availability in other countries, we should expect the device to be available in India.
