Chinese lens manufacturer Yongnuo has just released a new compact ultra-wide-angle lens for Sony E-Mount cameras: the YN 11mm f/1.8S DA DSM WL. This autofocus lens covers APS-C image sensors, and it can be purchased with an optional 2.4 GHz remote to control the focus without needing a follow focus. So, let’s take a closer look at it!
Yongnuo has been making affordable manual and autofocus lenses in multiple lens mounts for years. The company already has a solid lineup of lenses for Sony E-Mount cameras that cover both full-frame and APS-C image sensors.
Yongnuo is back with the first lens in a new lineup of lenses for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras: the YN 11mm f/1.8S DA DSM WL.
Yongnuo YN 11mm f/1.8S DA DSM WL – features
The YN 11mm f/1.8S DA DSM WL is a compact, lightweight, ultra-wide-angle prime lens weighing only 260g/0.57 lbs. According to the company, the lens is compatible with APS-C Sony E-Mount cameras, including the Sony FX30, ZV-E10, a6700, a6600, a6500, a6400, a6300, a6100, a6000, a5100, a5000, a3500, a3000.
On the lens itself, you’ll find a focus and aperture ring. For filmmakers, there is a button to turn the aperture from click to clickless, which is handy for small aperture adjustments. Also, there is a USB Type-C port for firmware updates, a user-assignable function button, and an AF/MF/SW switch.
Indeed, the Yongnuo YN 11mm f/1.8S DA DSM WL is the first lens in an upcoming lineup of prime lenses that can be controlled via the optional BR-L1 2.4 Ghz remote follow focus wheel. According to Yongnuo, 23/33/56mm DA DSM WL, all with an f/1.4 aperture, should be released later this year, with the same ability to adjust the focus remotely.
The BR-L1 remote has a 30m/98ft range and can adjust the focus of the compatible Yongnuo lenses electronically without the need for a wireless follow-focus system and follow-focus motor.
Lens design
The lens design of the YN 11mm f/1.8S DA DSM WL consists of 9 elements in 10 groups, including three low dispersion elements, two extra-low dispersion, three high refractive index, and two aspherical lenses. The aperture diaphragm features seven aperture blades. Last but not least, the front filter thread is 58mm, and the minimum focus distance is 15cm/5.9in.
Pricing and availability
The Yongnuo YN 11mm f/1.8S DA DSM WL is available now for $261 and $282 with the BR-L1 remote controller.
