New Details About Canon’s EOS R1 and EOS R5 Emerge

More detailed rumors are emerging about the arrival of new EOS R1 and the EOS R5 Mark II cameras from Canon for 2024.

The latest indications from the website Canon Rumors and others strongly indicate that Canon will make launching the EOS R1 a priority.

Specifically, this camera will emerge before an also strongly rumored R5 revamp in the form of a Mark II edition.

The R1 will likely be the flagship mirrorless camera in the Canon arsenal of shooters and will probably be unveiled through a sequence of growing details about its specs, design and performance. In other words, Canon will in this case do what it did before releasing the robust and powerful R3.

The whole process will likely take a couple or more months, so don’t hold your breath on a sudden release.

However, we will likely see the R1 emerge before the first half of 2024. This would let the camera be ready for publicity in time for the 2024 Olympics too by the way.

One interesting aspect of the R1 rumors is the resolution that’s being hinted at. Instead of coming loaded with a whopping amount of pixels in its sensor, as is the case with certain rival Sony and Nikon cameras, the EOS R1 will possibly have a lower resolution with more focus on image quality.

What this will mean in practice and comparative performance is anyone’s guess at this point, but it’s worth noting that Canon has been working on unique sensor technologies in recent years.

One other possibility is that the R1 will have a more minimalist feature set that focuses on letting photographers create images with less instead of packing its device with heavy-duty image processing technology.

For example, one part of the rumors around its specs indicates that the R1 won’t have 8K video abilities. If true, this would mean that it sports a resolution lower than the 45MP of the original R5.

As for the ESO R5 Mark II, Canon Rumors, through its sources, claims it will emerge in the second half of 2024.

If Canon does indeed release the R1 as a unique new addition in the first half of 2024, then it makes sense that the company opens some space between that release and the introduction of the R5.

Thus, the R1’s release date will indicate a bit about when we can expect the R5 Mark II.

With the R5, it’s certainly due for a revamp by now and a Mark II edition should feature many of the new consumer camera technologies found in rival models from Sony, Nikon and others. Notably, it should come with new AI-based features that the original R5 lacks.
